So I was supposed to do Guillermo del Toro movies, but I saw Magnificent 7 and needed more Western movies in my life. Let’s hit old dusty trail and take aim at some old timey tales of fiction and stuff. Yeah, I’m from Texas.

Movie 105: Mon Sep 26th

magnificent-seven-poster-2016Magnificent Seven
Directed by: Antoine Fuqua
Starring: Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Byung-hun Lee

Holy fuck did I love this movie. I definitely enjoy this than the original, if I remember it as well as I think I do… Anyway, the cast was great, the action was exciting and it was just the most classic-Western vibes than anything that has came out in the past 20 or so years. Long glaring shots are always intense and this movie was on point. It is a fun film. I can’t wait until my Akira Kurosawa week and watch Seven Samurai again.

Movie 106: Tues Sept 27th

a7b272c6b988b552152c404cbad1d853True Grit
Directed by: Henry Hathaway
Starring: John Wayne, Glen Campbell, Kim Darby, Robert Duvall

You know, the remake is all fine, but this film really is still interesting. John Wayne’s performance was great and all, but Kim Darby was phenomenal. As was Hailee Steinfeld in the remake. The only thing I don’t like about this movie is Glen Campbell’s piece of crap “performance.” Fun fact, the role was supposed to go to Elvis, but he wanted top bill for that part (which is fucking stupid) and so he suggested singer Glen Campbell. The director and studio approved so they could get a theme song as well. What a crappy deal.

Movie 107: Wed Sept 28th

Directed by: Quentin Tarantino
Starring: Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins

God damn do I love this movie. I know, it’s not really a “western” but I think it’s close enough. I think I have enjoyed Tarantino’s last 3 movies more than the ones from before. This cast is amazing, but I have to say that Walton Goggins surprised the hell out of me. I haven’t seen the director’s cut, which I fully intend to someday, but the theatrical version is just fine for now. I can’t really say much more. I enjoy the hell out of this film.

Movie 108: Thurs Sept 29th

The-Assassination-of-Jesse-James-by-the-Coward-Robert-Ford-2007The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Directed by: Andrew Dominik
Starring: Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck, Sam Shepard, Sam Rockwell

Woah. I do not remember that movie being that slow. I gotta say the casting is fantastic. I love Casey Affleck in this movie and it’s weird seeing Jeremy Renner, Mark Brandanowits, and Sam Rockwell in this kind of movie, but they were all great. If only the cinematographer was as good as the accents. Holy hell is it an ugly shot movie and wonky editing. I am glad I watched it because I like stories that have a slow pace like this, but the shitty directing and cinematography really made it hard to watch at times.

Movie 109: Fri Sept 30

urlDjango Unchained
Directed by: Quentin Tarantino
Starring: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerri Washington

I fucking love this movie so much. I have seen it at least 12 times. Yeah, it’s long, but it doesn’t feel that long to me each time I watch it. Fantastic cast, amazing directing, and a different kind of tale. Gotta say Samuel L. Jackson is the character I hate the most. I want to beat him up so badly, which makes him such a great character. Ugh. So many emotions!

Movie 110: Sat Oct 1

The_Good,_the_Bad,_the_Weird_film_posterThe Good The Bad The Weird
Directed by: Jee-woon Kim
Starring: Kang-ho Song, Byung-hun Lee, Woo-sung Jung

I really liked this movie. It’s fun, ridiculous, and a straight up western with a twist. Kang-ho is absolutely brilliant and has great physical comedy. It’s like a smarter Stephen Chow movie. I really want to watch it again actually. Excuse me.

Movie 111: Sun Oct 2

310_to_Yuma_(2007_film)3:10 to Yuma
Directed by: James Mangold
Starring: Jor El, Bruce Wayne, Angel, Percy Jackson

I, somehow, did not remember this movie as well as I thought I did. I like it, but I liked it a whole bunch more when I saw it years ago. The actors did really well, but I think Magnificent 7 ruined Westerns like this for me. This was way more tamed compared to 7. Again, I liked it, but I would much rather see the crazier, fun film instead. I am happy that it got made especially back in 2007. Props to them! Still waiting on 3:11 from Yuma to be made. I think that would be hilarious.
