I love Laika. They are the best animation company out there. I look forward to their movies more than Pixar, Aardman, and even Dreamworks. Let’s get this week rolling! *Also, I know Corpse Bride, Harold and Kumar, and King of California are not Laika, but they do use them!*
Movie 71: Mon Aug 22nd
Directed by: Henry Selick
Starring: Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, John Hodgman, Keith David
I love this movie. I love the look, feel, pacing, and story. The animation is top notch and has set a new bar for stop animation. Since this movie has come out (minus Pirates! Band of Misfits) every stop motion movie looks unemotional and stale. Including Frankenweenie, even though I did enjoy it. Henry Selick also DIRECTED Nightmare Before Christmas. A lot of people don’t know that. I have seen this movie countless times and it still gets me pumped. How could Laika follow up with this movie?
Movie 72: Tues Aug 23rd
Directed by: Chris Butler and Sam Fell
Starring: Kodi Smit-McPhee, Anna Kendrick, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jeff Garlin
BOOM! Like this! Another winner! This was actually the first time I got to watch it from start to finish and let me tell you. I regret that so much. I was laughing so hard. I love this movie, that’s all I can say about that. The voice acting is amazing, the humor is spot on, and it’s just something fresh. 2 for 2. Bravo!
Movie 73: Wed Aug 24th
Directed by: Graham Annable, Anthony Stacchi
Starring: Ben Kingsley, Jared Harris, Isaac Hempsted….. Meh… Bran from GOT, and Dee Bradley Baker
Ok. A lot of people weren’t too thrilled or drawn to this one. I can understand. It looks funky. However, I was SO excited for it and I went it with high hopes and you know what? I fucking love this movie. I have seen it many times. This is the best stop motion I have ever seen and possibly the best in film to this date. It is a gorgeous movie and the detail is phenomenal. Also, I love the story and characters. Again, it is something fresh. Laika doesn’t make the movies you see over and over again. They want you to be on your toes and watching something new. If you haven’t seen it or don’t want to for the look of it, shame on you. It’s phenomenal.
Movie 74: Thurs Aug 25th
Kubo and the Two Strings
Directed by: Travis McKnight
Starring: Art Parkinson, Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Rooney Mara
Alrighty. Holy shit. What the fuck, how do I even? God damn this movie. It broke me. What the- What was that? You know what I just watched? The god-damned best movie of the year, quite possibly on my top 10. What the flying-how? HOW?! How did they make that movie SO FUCKING STUNNING and coherent the entire time. I just…. I am speechless. Laika are you even HUMAN?!?! If you don’t get your ass to the theater for some Kubo and his god-damn Two Strings, I will come to your house and take a dump on your finest rug. You animal! You monster! Get the fuck off your computer and do something with your life. Go see fucking Kubo and the Two Strings!
But seriously, I am writing this late because this weekend was hella busy for me. I saw this 4 days ago and I am aching to see it again. It is definitely my number one movie of the year and I don’t think anything will come close to this gem. This movie broke me because I don’t think any animated film will wow me as much as this film did.
Movie 75: Fri Aug 26th
Directed by: Tim Burton (meh, kinda), Mike Johnson
Starring: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, Emily Watson, Alfred Finney
Meh. The second film of Tim Burton’s demise in quality. I did like Tim Burton, but holy crap make a good, thought out movie. This movie just wasn’t there. The songs are terrible, except the piano scene, the voice acting SUCKS. Oh my god is it terrible. If I ever have to sit through Johnny Depp and his whimper-like voice again I may strangle someone. I have seen this movie multiple times and I still don’t get the love. The animation is flawless, it just sucks it’s wasted on a hack like Burton. I am so glad Laika got it’s start from this though. Next movie.
Movie 76: Sat Aug 27th
A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas
Directed by: Todd Strauss-Schulson
Starring: Kal Penn, John Cho, NPH, Wafflebot
You know, I never understood why I love the Harold and Kumar movies. Besides the fresh humor and great gags, I just have never done drugs and can’t relate to them. But for some fucking reason I love these movies from start to finish. Even though I don’t get high or whatever, I still enjoy the fuck out of these and completely understand. These are really great, funny comedies (especially the first one) and this ridiculous sequel is so much fun. I recommend this if you liked the first two movies. Don’t forget that this movie birthed the idea we could have a robot that make waffles. Why does this not exist yet?!
Laika did this scene and it was glorious:
Movie 77: Sun Aug 28th
King of California
Directed by: Mike Cahill
Starring: Michael Douglas, Evan Rachel Wood, and I am lazy for the rest
Well I watched this movie last night and I already forgot it. I seriously couldn’t remember what I watched for the life of me until I went to Laika’s Wiki page to see what they were associated with. It wasn’t bad, it was just so unbelievably forgettable. Plus, it’s a movie that takes you back to Costco, which is somewhere I have been to enough in film. Thanks Dane Cook. If I remember correctly, the cast was great. I don’t remember the Laika animated “dream sequence” and nor does Haley. But, we didn’t dislike it. Maybe I will try again.
