What a weekend it has been, Gatherers! Long Beach Comic Con was a most wonderful affair. Great cosplay seen and plenty of merchandise bought. Now I have my HBO 30-day trial and am poised to watch good ole Khaleesi invade Westeros. But before I take care of important things like that, I must also see my responsibility to you adoring fans and give you a few suggestions for light reading this week. So how about some of those Picks, hmmm?!
What is a Glacier? (one-shot)
Writer(s): Sophie Yanow
Artist(s): Sophie Yanow
Cover Artist(s): Sophie Yanow
Publisher: Retrofit/Big Planet
Synopsis: “Sophie Yanow, acclaimed creator of War of Streets and Houses, returns with another autobiographical tale of her trip to Iceland. Air travel in our environmentally fraught times is juxtaposed with her reflections on a relationship that ended a year prior.” -PREVIEWSworld
As strange as it may seem, a good comics story doesn’t have to rely upon epic heroes or villains in order for them to be a relevant tale. What if I was to suggest a work that is both autobiographical as well as allegorical? Now before you just throw down and tell me to just shove off with this suggestion, let me just entice you with a tale of a woman that speaks of experiences of a relationship ended combined with symbolic overtones of the effect air travel has upon our precious environment. A curious combination, one that I hope intrigues you as much as it does me.
Trump’s Titans #1
Writer(s): John Barron
Artist(s): John Miller
Cover Artist(s): Bill Blankenship
Synopsis: “Enter an alternate reality just slightly to the right of our own, where President Donald J. Trump is not only the most powerful man in the world, but the most powerful being in the universe! Newcomer comic creator John Barron, who is most definitely not Donald Trump (he wishes!), invites you into this “alt-right” universe where amazing technology lost since the Reagan administration is re-discovered after a raid of the White House’s secret science lab. What happens next is terrific, tremendous and big league huge, believe me!” -PREVIEWSworld
Sometimes alternate realities can yield strange and wholly unexpected phenomenon. Perhaps a blonde Wonder Woman or a Soviet Superman. But what about a world where ’45 is not only the most powerful man on Earth but an omnipotent entity in the universe?! Yeah, that’s exactly the kind of jaw dropping craziness you see in this next pick. And before you jump on the political bandwagon, just remember that comics are often meant to be parody of current events and/or figures. So read the story for what it is and see what happens when the Donald and his White Staff manage to take over a bunch of Reagan-Era tech to make them powerful beyond measure.
September has begun folks, and already some most intriguing Picks are there for the taking. Symbolic allegory of autobiographical problems mixed with alternate realities and 45 at the forefront. Subjects as different as night and day and yet are within the realm of the indie comics medium for your reading pleasure. They are available from your tablet or computer but I encourage you to support your local comic book shop and buy the issues themselves. Read them and be sure to share them with your friends. Start up a conversation and be sure to leave a comment or two. But most importantly, Gatherers, remember…GGG!
