February is here, fine Grand Geeks and wonderful Gatherers!  Love is just around the corner with Valentine’s Day.  Or perhaps you’re also excited for Chinese New Year?  Well, those are both perfectly legitimate things to be excited for this month but for the indie reader like me, they are a close second to the occasion of reading even more comics.  Of course, I’m not opposed to celebrating them while also reading a good independent label comic either so, maybe there’s a compromise to be had here!

Dejah Thoris #1
Writer(s): Amy Chu
Artist(s): Pasquale Qualano
Cover Artist(s): J. Scott Campbell, Frank Cho, Mike McCone, Sergio Davila
Publisher: Dynamite

Synopsis: “Dejah Thoris, obsessed with finding the legendary Gardens of Mars, recruits her own expedition team of scientists. But once outside the palace walls, things don’t go as planned, and the Princess learns the hard way just how dangerous Barsoom really is.

PREVIEWSworld

It really seems that, try as anyone might, we really cannot escape the wonderful world that Edgar Rice Burroughs envisioned well over a century ago now.  Barsoom has captured the hearts and imaginations of so many.  Its world helped stoke the modern genres of science fiction and science fantasy as we know them.  Its iconic character John Carter being an essential superhero.  But Dejah Thoris is truly where all of the action began and to which continues to be a great mystique to us all.  Join her as she is looking for these gardens hoping to stoke the lushness that was once ever present on Mars.  It’s a rough place out past the palace walls, and in this new series we might get to see once again just how rough it is!

Legenderry Red Sonja #1
Writer(s): Marc Andrekyo
Artist(s): Igor Lima
Cover Artist(s): Joe Benitez
Publisher: Dynamite

Synopsis: “Last we saw of Red Sonja of the Legenderry world, she was living the pirate’s life aboard her ship, The Nautilus. But times have changed. As she tries to rebuild her life once again, she must save the Big City from two houses divided and the star-crossed lover bringing them to the brink of war!

PREVIEWSworld

What’s amazing about this spin on Red Sonja is that it not only combines the element of classical high fantasy but seeks to mix it with a bit of Golden Age of Piracy’s culture and just a bit of steampunk to throw into the mix.  A veritable mixture that is as entertaining as it is powerful!  Clearly the pirate’s life is meant for her on board her ship the Nautilus.  But as is the case even she must heed the call of the heroic path when the Big City is threatened by internal divisions set on bringing everything down.  Of course, I’m more interested in this star-crossed lover as you should be as well.  Read on, friends and see just how legen-wait for it-dary this new storyline shall be.  Oh and be sure to not let the rum go dry this time.

Dynamite has really stepped up the game this month, folks, with a couple of oldies but goodies when it comes to the realm of strong female characters.  The Warlord of Barsoom and the She-Devil with a Scimitar.  And along with them tons of writing and artistic talent to wow your indie needs.  These books and other gems are what you must seek when surfing your phone or tablet or computer.  But of course I will tell you to go the next step and show support for your local comic store and buy the actual hardcopy issues themselves.  Read on and share with your friends. Start up that conversation and be sure to leave a comment or two. But most importantly Grand Geeks and Gatherers, remember…GGG!
