Hello to all you fine Gatherers and Grand Geeks aplenty. As I write this I am fighting off extreme exhaustion coming back from Long Beach Comic Expo this weekend. Yup, the con-season for this guy has begun and as it is every year I am sorely unprepared for the festivities. Alas, it will not keep me from finding the best picks for you to get from the convenience of your tablet or a trip to your local comic book shop. Read on my friends!
Writer(s): Alex De Campi
Artist(s): Esau Escorzi
Cover Artist(s): Alex Ross
Publisher: Heavy Metal Magazine
Synopsis: “Heavy Metal’s legendary character finally gets her own ongoing series courtesy of writer, Alex de Campi (No Mercy, Semiauto Magic) and artist Stephane Roux (Power Girl) delivering another tale of the immortal warrior’s quest to avenge injustice. Alex Ross provides two beautiful cover selections, launching this character into her greatest adventure – Comics!”
A dream come true for any reader of Heavy Metal Magazine, plain and simple. Taarna in her own ongoing! Who would have thunk it?! It really seems to have come full circle for a character who started as a backup in the general magazine but then again, there are many that would suggest that was already realized with regard to the Canadian-American film bearing the namesake of the magazine. Regardless, before then she was just the leading character in a compilation anthology type work. Now she has her OWN series to regale you with tales to satisfy your fantasy world desires!
Shiver Bureau #1
Writer(s): Walt Ostlie
Artist(s): Walt Ostlie
Cover Artist(s): Walt Ostlie
Publisher: Scout Comics
Synopsis: “A cross between Sherlock Holmes and Ghostbusters, Shiver Bureau is the tale of a formidable detective that is forced into a partnership with a wise-cracking, hotshot inspector to save London from being overrun by ghosts and monsters. Racing through the city to solve a case of missing orphans, they run into gangs, ghosts, dockside mafia, and a giant monster, all while trying not to kill each other.”
Detective services meets those guys who you know you’re gonna call. Two of my favorite things. And a must have for anyone who is interested in finding out what exactly happens when you’re both a detective as well as a ghost hunter. And of course the story isn’t complete without its version of a Watson, and in this story you get it and so much more. So, Ghost Busters, Sherlock, RIPD, the Men in Black, you are all on notice that the Shiver Bureau is in town and ready to clean house!
There you have it for the week, Grand Geeks and Gatherers galore. Tales of woman warriors and ghostbusting detectives to satisfy your every indie reading need. But these two are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the realm of such books. And they are available at the mere touch of your screen on your mobile device. But as always I will tell you to walk that extra mile to your local comic book shop and get the actual issues themselves and show your support for their business. Read them and share with your friends. Start up a conversation and be sure to leave a comment or two. But most importantly Gatherers and Grand Geeks, remember…GGG!
