Howdy Grand Geeks and Gatherers galore. We are past the middle of September and the days of summer are winding down now. If only the heat was being as generous to us. I do have to admit the mornings are significantly cooler but unfortunately that isn’t much of a gesture when the days are still reaching 80+ degrees on the Fahrenheit scale (apologies to those in Europe who read this, no doubt!). Reading always helps me to overlook the heat though, so let’s see what I’ll suggest to you this week to sate all your indie needs.
Chief Wiggum’s Felonious Funnies #1
Writer(s): Ian Boothby, Tony Digerolamo, Dean Rankine
Artist(s): Jacob Chabot, Mike Kazaleh, Dean Rankine
Cover Artist(s): Jason Ho, Nathan Kane, Derek Fridolfs
Publisher: Bongo Comics
Synopsis: “The man with the badge (and a box of donuts on the backseat of his police cruiser) gets his own arresting One-Shot Wonder with Chief Wiggum’s Felonious Funnies #1! It would be a crime not to snatch up a copy of your own!”
Ahhhhhh Chief Wiggum. The cop who is as much a running joke to Springfield as is Mayor Quimby. The only difference is between the two I share a love of donuts and thus am always going to support the former over the latter. Alas it’s about time that Springfield’s police chief finally gets the starring role in his very own comic book. Just exactly what adventures await us in the backseat of his sweet police cruiser, on top of those delectable pastries, relies on your willingness to get this bad boy. So, to take a cue from an episode of the show…is this a tale where Wiggums actually keeps his pants on in this issue? Gotta read to find out, boys and girls! It’s a story definitely worth your time…just remember the donuts!
Rick and Morty Presents Sleepy Gary #1
Writer(s): Magdalene Visaggio
Artist(s): Nick Filardi, CJ Cannon
Cover Artist(s): CJ Cannon, Cara McGee
Publisher: Oni Press
Synopsis: “Sleepy Gary may be a parasite, but when Jerry is with him, he’s… happy. Does it matter if it isn’t really real? Can either of them even know what’s real anymore? Explore the nuances of love, perception, and high-speed vespa chases in this darkly funny and poignant one-shot, written by Magdalene Visaggio (KIM & KIM, ETERNITY GIRL) and illustrated by series artists CJ Cannon and Nick Filardi.”
The parasitical Sleepy Gary doesn’t have to be all bad when one really looks at how peaceful he can be when Jerry is by his side. Whether the presence is real is an irrelevant measure though when one really looks closely at the relationship, and that is what is pursued within this particular issue. Of course, what one must wonder as they get into reading this is…just who is really the one in control…Gary or Jerry? Schiwfty thought, no?! Maybe?
And there we have it for the last week of summer, y’all! Parasitical doppelgangers combined with stakeouts and donuts! What more could one ask for? These are the gems among so many others that await you at the mere click of a button on your keyboard or at the stroke of a screen on your phone or tablet. But being the good supporters of local businesses that I know you are, you will instead march down to your local comic stores and purchase the hard copies of these wonderful books. Read them and share with your friends. Spark a conversation and be sure to leave a comment or two. But most importantly, remember…GGG!
