Happy autumnal equinox to all you adoring Gatherers and Grand Geeks! Did you all know that today is United Nations Day? Amazing to think that seventy years ago this day it was decided that a public celebration of one of Earth’s most successful collective security measures would be undertaken. And what better way to show our appreciation for such a day than to find some new indie books to read! Alright well maybe that isn’t the most appropriate measure to be taken for such a day of celebration, but I am sure the founders of the collective would appreciate the sentiment all the same. So just what shall I recommend to you this week?!
Dead Kings #1
Writer(s): Steve Orlando
Artist(s): Matthew Dow Smith
Cover Artist(s): Matthew Dow Smith, Michael Gaydos
Synopsis: “NEW SERIES! Sasha never saw his younger brother…until the secret police made him disappear. Sasha Vasnetsov left Thrice-Nine-the dirty folklore world that limps along in the wreckage of a Technomagic War-thirty years ago and never looked back. But word that the secret police have sent his brother Gena to a work camp for the socially degenerate drags him back, with a promise to free Gena and return him to their mother before her fiftieth birthday. The only problem? Sasha isn’t a fraction of the tough guy he tries to be, so if he’s going to break back into Thrice-Nine…he’ll need help…”
One can never get enough of a good story where magic and technology live side by side in an apocalyptic realm. But to combine that topic with a story of brotherly rescue is truly a powerful combination indeed!
Baron Rat and the Great Cheese Caper #1 (one-shot)
Writer(s): Troy Vevasis
Artist(s): Aleksandar Jovic
Cover Artist(s): Aleksandar Jovic
Synopsis: “Mr. Crypt’s best friend, Baron Rat, is now starring in his very own adventure! All rats love cheese, but Baron Rat loves it more than anything. Will he get the cheese he so desires, or be left empty-handed? Find out in this story that’s entertaining for readers of all ages!”
Finally we get an actual comic adventure for the likes of Baron Rat, everyone’s favorite rodent rapscallion! Thing is though, all rats love cheese, and Baron Rat is no different. So really this story is as singular minded in its intent, and that is to lead us down the path of seeing whether he obtains the cheese he so desperately desires. Honestly I will lean on the side of hoping that he gets the cheese but at the same time can’t help but hope that his human pursuers make it a challenging endeavor for him. To the winner goes the cheese!
And there we have it for the week, Grand Geeks and Gatherers! Tales of cheesy heists along with apocalyptic Wild West magical stories of brotherly love. These gems and more are what await you at the mere click of a button on your keyboard or at the touch of a screen on your tablet or phone. But of course I’ll encourage you to go that extra step and head down to your local comic store today and show your support for their business by buying the actual hard copy issues themselves. Read them and share with your friends. Start up a conversation and be sure to leave a comment or two. But most importantly, remember…GGG!
