Howdy you Grand Geeks and Gatherers out there! It sure has gotten rainy and cold lately so once again I confine myself to being indoors and keeping myself warm. Even now as I get my morning coffee and breakfast ready I’m doing so while pulling up some great indie books to read. But before I do so, let’s see what I shall recommend to you this week!
Averee Premier Edition #1
Writer(s): Stephanie Phillips, Dave Johnson
Artist(s): Cresta, Marika, Andrew Dalhouse
Cover Artist(s): Dave Johnson
Publisher: A Wave Blue World Inc.
Synopsis: “As if high school wasn’t tough enough, Averee’s life is turned upside down when her status mysteriously drops on Ranked, the social media app that determines everyone’s real world privileges. With her best friend Zoe and her crush Luke in tow, she hatches a plan to kidnap its spokesperson, virtual popstar Pretty Kitty. But once they discover the company’s dark motives, how will they take back control of their own status?…”
In a world where social media determines one’s status and privileges, a high school student is determined to gain back her rep by capturing its spokesperson. Only thing is, the company that controls is found to have dark motives. For shame!
The Encoded #1
Writer(s): Josh Blaylock, Mark Powers
Artist(s): Jethro Morales
Cover Artist(s): Phil Hester
Publisher: Devil’s Due
Synopsis: “What if our fears of a tyrannical A.I. turn out to be unfounded, but nevertheless, humanity forces this machine intelligence to fight back?…”
Greco-Roman symbolism is strong within this one! This is a story in which humans have overestimated the power of AI when a conflict with such a system brings it to being shut down when it becomes self aware. Years later the government guarantees it cannot come back with simple reboot techniques at the cost of shutting down digital tech. Only thing is, humanity is fooled, for the AI downloaded a portion of its digital sentience in the consciousness of a hemp farmer. Seriously, what could go wrong?!
And there we have it for the week, folks! Digital stories revolving around the power of social media as well as artificial intelligence. These gems can be found at the mere click of a button, among others of course, at the mere click of a button on your keyboards or at the touch of a screen on your phones and/or tablets. But knowing you all support local businesses, I’m sure you’ll head down to your comic shop this Wednesday and pick up the hardcopy issues themselves. Read them and share with your friends. Start a conversation and be sure to leave a comment or two. But most importantly, remember…GGG!
