Howdy Gatherers and Grand Geeks! For a change it seems to have temporarily cooled off in the kingdom of Southern California. Suits me just fine so I will definitely be heading for the pool later for some downtime and to relax. But before that, let’s see what looks good this week in the indie comics world!
Lester of the Lesser Gods #1 (one-shot)
Writer(s): Eric Powell, Lucky Yates, Mac Cushing
Artist(s): Gideon Kendall
Cover Artist(s): Eric Powell, Gideon Kendall
Publisher: Albatross Funnybooks
Synopsis: “…Lester has no friends and no life. That is until Satan unleashes the Apocalypse! No longer is he a 32-year-old, 300 pound LARPer who lives with his mother. A mother who constantly re-minds him of his lowly conception in a biker bar bathroom. But momma didn’t get that gimpy hip from knocking boots with any old biker… t’was a GOD! And Satan shall suckle his knuckle! HUZZAH…”
To all the LARPers out there, this book speaks to you my friends! Turns out Lester isn’t just some normal simpleton, but a demigod who’s time to shine is now since Satan has unleashed the End of Days! But in all seriousness, this is for all those who love a good fantasy meets unrealistic reality tale. Read on and see how Lester will prove everyone, including mama dearest, wrong regarding their preconceived notions about him.
Stud & the Bloodblade #1 (of 3)
Writer(s): Perry Crowe
Artist(s): Jed Dougherty
Cover Artist(s): Jed Dougherty
Publisher: Comics Experience
Synopsis: “What’s better than a comic book? Two comic books! All three Studly issues are double-sized for $1 more-twice the story, nearly the same price! Welcome to Ouroboros, a world teetering between far future and primordial past, where aliens and barbarians, bigfoots and robots, monsters and puns wrestle for control! Mightiest is Stud, he of immense strength and nonexistent impulse control! Follow Stud’s caravan of carnage as his cursed BloodBlade, keeps him on a razor’s edge between hero and Gary!…”
Now this story is the sum total of everything I want when science fiction meets fantasy. This three-part miniseries focuses on a barbarian named Stud who lacks impulse control with regard to practically everything. Watch as he continues to fail miserably on all those intelligence based decisions but undoubtedly kicks @$$ when it comes to wanton slaughter. Its quite the STUD-ly story! (See what I did there?)
And there we have it for the week, folks! Tales of dopey, blade-cursed barbarians combined with LARPers turned demigods! These tales and so many more await you at the mere click of a button on your keyboards or at the touch of a screen on your tablets and/or phones. But since most of you consciously support local businesses, I will encourage you to head down to your local comic shops this Wednesday to pick up the hardcopy issues themselves. Read them and share with your friends. Start a conversation and be sure to leave a comment or two. But most importantly, remember…GGG!
